Gary Gygax passes away
Gary Gygax, one of the creators of D&D has passed away. He was 69. Gygax has succumbed to heart-related ailments.
Even though Gygax's contribution to gaming came from ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"analogââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ games like D&D and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, his influence is still being felt by many gamers today. If not for his innovations, computer RPGs as we know them now will have been so different.
March 4th. RIP.
after reading the obit, i spent the better part of monday reading about D&D. i have never played any RPG but i've had friends who were way way into it. i remember in the 80s there was a 'satanic panic' regarding D&D which instantly made it cool, well...cool to me anyways. i'm sure it made life hell for kids who were into it. ah, to be young and socially misunderstood!
my reading lead me to the "steam tunnel" myths and the story behind "mazes and monsters". i was of age when the D&D cartoon was on CBS and i remember being somewhat disturbed by it. i read on wikipedia that at the time it was considered the most violent show on television (!!!!)
I played D&D and Vampire. We played so much that we called each other by our character names, rather than our real ones. Silly, eh? Hahaha! We sent each other hand written invites and came in costume... I drew my characters and a few others for the rest of the folks. It was really fun...I miss playing those games. When you get a good dungeon master, the game rocks that much more.
By the way, I have probably seen this cartoon that you speak of, but then again, I was probably holed up in the kitchen or the basement of my friends' house playing D&D-- to bother watching it. I wasn't ever really too much of a tv watcher. Commercials and cartoons however...different story. But like I said, too busy! Hah!
Wow, ramble much?

RIP to one of the Elder Epic Geeks.
