"'My agent had told me that he was going to make me the Janet Gaynor of England - I was going to play all the sweet roles. Whereupon, at the tender age of thirteen, I set upon the path of playing nothing but hookers.'- Ida Lupino, director of The Hitch-Hiker"
Survival horror / horror-based games
Ladies!
I've got a little seed germinating in my little brain about women who play and/or are into video games in the horror genre. I'm wondering if there's something interesting there.
Are you into these types of videogames?
Are you into the horror-based games more than you are most other game genres?
Anything you'd like to add, briefly, is cool- I'm just trying to get people talking.
And guys, if there's a woman in your life who's into these games, first of all be thankful
and second, point her here!
YES, definitely into horror-themed games (and fantasy themed games) more than any other type.
The 7th Guest and its sequel The 11th Hour (those are a little bit older, and for PC) http://www.mobygames.com/game/7th-guest
I also enjoyed American Mcgees Alice, the dark Alice in Wonderland PC game that came out in like 2000. http://www.mobygames.com/game/american-mcgees-alice
I ALWAYS play House of the Dead in arcades. I love that game. When I go into an arcade, I am way more likely to play the Elvira pinball or Munsters pinball than lets say, the regular themed ones.
I loved the Castlevania series for Nintendo back in the 80's....
In terms of non-video horror, I have always been in love with the VAMPIRE THE MASQUERADE (it's kind of like D&D, but horror) game, and also the board game GOTH, which is horror trivia.
I usually only play the games that have some sort or horror or fantasy theme to them...although I'm not a huge gamer, only every now and them...but I love arcade games, especially pinball. I love the Elvira one as well, and there's a Tales of the Crypt one which is pretty fun. My favorite one though was the Nightmare on Elm Street pinball machine. I only played it a couple times in my hometown, and haven't seen it since...man was that cool though!
I have racked up more time in horror survival gaming than writing I'm ashamed to say - I am on with Silent Hill 4 at present and that came hot on the heels of Haunting Grounds.
I have had just about all the Resident Evil games, survivor 2 was limp! I have a battered copy of Alone in the Dark that I treasure.
On the sickometre I think Silent Hill 3 was wayyyy up there, when that lady ingested Heathers unborn dead God foetus - yacky poo poo!
Love it!
If I didn't write horror books and had an affinity for programming I really think I would have gone into game writing/production.
On saying that though I have played all Final Fantasy games - aside from the GameCube edition they made, fakers.
Oh yeah, Tekken, and Mortal Kombat that seems to cover scraping and blood thirst needs...erm. That's it really - oh yeah, that odd game Obscure that was too blody hard - I pinned that to my shed and now use it to confuse cats. why cats you say, because they find the shiny disc interesting in the same way I found that game really and truely hacked me off! :!:
Mortal Kombat rocks it!
Blood AND batterings!
GET OVER HERE!!!

FATALITY>>>POW!
Didn't quite get the whole Shujinko thing in deception though - dunno if you played it but they RPG'd Mortal Kombat on that one and I think Shaolin Monks is the same but haven't had chance for that yet - gettting pissed off and stuck with Silent Hill 4...
Also sad to say looks like Soul Calibre 3 has been heavily RPG'd to...
I loooove Cervantes - hes one meam and moody fu*ck*
r...and Voldo, simply because he's a freak!
I agree, Fatal Frame is awesome, though I had to stop playing it as I worked third shift in a tiny shack outside... and it was always foggy at night..
I also play the non-video horror games (DnD esque). GURPS lets you make anything. and I've been running something called Little Fears. The players play as children and the thing under your bed is real. It's from a place called Closetland.
Survival games are awesome.
My favourite series is Silent Hill, notably number 2. I play games primarily because I like being embarked on stories, and Silent Hill is all about story, despite how messed up they always are.
Not only that, but Silent Hill presents its stories through symbolism. That's a hard feat for a game to do, to be able to present its plot indirectly. Very much like anything David Lynch does.
And even if it weren't for that, the imagery and atmosphere of these games is beautiful. Gameplay elements were also quite innovative at the time, such as radio static alerting you to the presence of enemies, or having to rely on everything but sight to get around.
I can understand why not everyone would like these games, especially with the shoddy control schemes, but despite that, AND the fact that today, the formula is old and has been done much better by more recent games, Silent Hill will always have a place in my heart. It's a badass series, and very frightening, disturbing and mature. If the ESRB knew anything this woulda been banned everywhere. When you comprehend the plots, it's like-oh god, NO.
Very impressive, and I've yet to play anything that's as cruel and inhuman as Silent Hill as far as stories go.
I could rave about Silent Hill forever, but eh.
I also love the Clock Tower series, notably number two. It's just...weird. And fun. Quite the ambiance, but I admit, after completing it nearly 20 times I still don't understand the plot.
Oh and Rule of Rose is awesome, too. The gameplay gets repetitive, but the story, once again, is like...*Curls up in a corner and trembles.*
I also love role playing games too, mostly JRPG's or SRPG's. Final Fantasy is what I started with, however I quickly got tired of all the clichés and archetypal characters that define these games. Not FF itself; those are still awesome, although I admit I like the older ones way better...but those which aspire to be carbon copies of big name games...
Why am I always playing with a spiky haired prepubescent teen destined to save the world?
Why does he wear goggles that serve no purpose during the entirety of the game? How come there's always a girl with cat ears who thinks she can cook?
The higher the hair, to closer to God much?
I guess it's the formula and it works, but upon my game shop and pawn shop treks, I've managed to find some rather rare and delightful gems, such as Shadow Hearts or the Shin Megami games, which are RPG's but with a horror theme.
I love the stories in games and this is why I play when I'm too lazy to read something, but you gotta begin expanding your expectations when a lot of it is reheated material. :/
It's funny because I don't think that way when it comes to movies, probbaly because watching a movie doesn't demand as much time or concentration as a video game.
Of course stories may not by why everyone plays games so...*Looks at post.* Wow I never shut up do I haha.
I played a good bit of the first Silent Hill and found it to be pretty awesome. Very creepy and atmospheric.
Another worthy mention, at least from the reviews (I haven't played it yet), is Dead Space. I ordered it through Steam on Black Friday (it was like 9 bucks or something, I forget), and plan to play it a little further down the line. Sci-fi horror!
I played a bit of it at a friend's place. For what little I've seen, it's pretty much all that.
It's got both cheap scare tactics a la Resident Evil and that feeling from games like Silent Hill where you actually DON'T want to proceed because it's just too scary lol.
Also the enemies look great, and a new gameplay thing here, to destroy an enemy, you literally have to disembowel it and sever off all its limbs, otherwise it just won't stop coming after you haha.
That and some other cool stuff like floating around in this huge room or mounting this turret thing to kill this gigantic monster outside the space station.

I think the last horror-esque game Mrs. Esh played was Parasite Eve.
She won't even get close to Infected, which is eating up my time now.
