I need help! By next week I have to have a thesis proposal on my supervisor's table. I already wrote a proposal, to cut a long story short (I've had night terror's since a child and I wanted to do my thesis on how they can actually inspire the horror genre, looking at Dario, Craven, Speilberg who all claim to of had them - then along with my thesis I would make a short night terror on film). HOWEVER they said 'NO WAY - to personal'. So Im back to the drawing bored! I'm doing a Masters in Film studies and guess what my personal supervisor is specialist in - IRISH STUDIES Oups How crap is that?? I can't stand Irish stuff. Everytime I mention Horror he looks at me with these eyes 8O *stab stab stab* Wink

Anywho, I like Horror, I like Women - So can anyone give me any leads on what would be a great, ground breaking, inspirating, bone chilling, original, brilliant and arousing thesis topic idea???? Tongue

Thanks in Advance MWAH Cool

Well, what about appeasing your advisor's love of all thing irish by focusing on Irish horror films of the last few years?

Paddy Breathnach’s 'Shrooms', Conor McMahon’s 'Dead Meat', 'Boy Eats Girl', and the even more recent 'Insatiable' by jessie kirby? I think 'Black Sheep' might be Irish.

OR you could write about irish mythology that has been used in horror films: Leprechauns, banshees, and the like.

Or you could focus on women as witches in horror. I like that one., That way you get to talk about suspiria.

You can't pay for this kind of advice and great idea sharing. Heidi, you kick ass. I have nothing to add, I think Heidi summed it up nicely. Besides that, I have no idea anyway==other than to add, yeah focus on Irish women in horror...

me too! i don't thesis but i do art and the night terrors i had are the basis for pretty much everything i art to some degree or another. it just made me super happy to hear this because most people i know who had terrors hate the genre.

Arithmetock - You are not alone lady!! Tongue

GabbyGoff - your right, this advice is awesome! Thank You!

Superheidi - Your advice is great (the ideas are inspiring).... I have to admit when I read 'witches and horror' that gave me chills.

Did you mean women has actually witches (i.e The Craft) or women acting like b*tches (witches) ????

I would love to work on something entailing this. Perhaps my video installation could be based on the developing / procress of the horror 'witch'. Or the installation could answer what's in tail for the 21st century horror genre 'witch'. Mmmmmm interesting.

One last question for anyone, how do I go about finding what has and hasn't been done on this issue? It seems like a great idea but I need to know what has been done (how do I do this)?? I suppose I need to look into gender / feninist issues in horror)..... Thanks a bunch!! Laughing out loud

Girls, I hear all the time that what you write limits you as to were you can work is this true?? I'm so scared to write about irish things (even though it would probally give me a better mark!) incase that it limits my options. I want to go to do a PhD in USA, Canada or Europe.... so surely if I write about Irish stuff - It will limit me. Do you think this is true? Because it would be much easier to have some kind of Irish link (e.g Women of Irish Horror, or Irish Mythology in Horror) as my Master's thesis, Im just terrifyed it will restrain me later. Evil

What you devote your entire life to will certainly sometimes confine you in the future, I won't lie to you. I have devoted the past 4 years of my life to Pretty-Scary, and now, pretty much, I am seen as a person who writes stuff anout women in horror, and not so much other aspects. But that's okay! Because I get to write in HORROR.

However, what you do your thesis on won't confine you or prevent you from doing future research into any subject or any genre of film! I can guarantee you. You are only limited if you choose to be specifically known for one area. If you don't, then you are free to pursue whatever ventures in horror film or other genres you like.

It's more important to get into the nitty gritty of one subject to have a great thesis than it is to worry about it and not do a good enough job on the thesis.

You're too young to be confined to any one subject, anyway.

I would definitely look at 'witches' - real magic practictioners, in horror!

Films I would look at:

Suspiria
Black magic Woman
The Craft
Hellblock 13
The City of the Dead (1960)
daughters of Satan

does anyone have anymore witch movie suggestions?

I know its rather late advice but try and get a copy of the text :-

Men, women, and chainsaws : gender in the modern horror film / by Carol J. Clover

I've been working on a thesis proposal myself for a while concerning horror films and found this text to be an excellent starting point.

You could always delve into the topic of how woman's sexuality has been portayed through the horror film and how its changed through the ages.

Or how modern horror films have embraced the use of verisimilitude in their plots etc. If you need furher help just send me a private email.

Cheers
Chris
