I can't believe I applied for a job as a video technician for a city in California, and was turned down. (At least they were nice enough in the rejection notice.)

It is severely depressing knowing that shooting feature films isn't a good enough of a qualification for shooting city council meetings and posting the footage online.

<sigh>

That is just nuts.

Did they say why? Were you overqualified for the position?

No, they said they received 153 applications and selected the best for interviews and that I wasn't one of them.

The only thing I can think of is something someone told me in Cleveland who was in a band. He said he had the worst time getting hired for day jobs because most places wouldn't hire people in bands - they perceive them as being not serious about the job, unreliable, prone to call in sick if they booked a gig, etc.

I interviewed for a new media company last December(?) which would have been similar to the consulting job I had at iCreate.com and the supervisors who interviewed me liked me and immediately turned me over to the company's CEO/owner, who initially seemed impressed with me, but even though I told him I'd be willing to sign an agreement on not looking for other work while I was there, he mercilessly (and very rudely) grilled me on that point and wouldn't hire me. My guess is that he was concerned that I'd leave for a feature after being hired and (very importantly) I think he perceived me as a threat to his authority. (Which is why he grilled me and was so rude to me - he wanted to see how submissive I'd be to him, and I wasn't.)

I asked Greg, whom I've shot two features for, about advice on dealing with directors/producers on potential features, and he said that he thought I probably was loosing work because a lot of producers and directors were intimidated by me and would rather hire someone less knowledgable and more submissive/ego stroking.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

I don't understand at all. At ALL. This just doesn't make sense. I can understand that perhaps the people at the City Council were afraid you'd leave for a feature if you had the chance. Do you actually think you would have?

What makes me ill is 153 applicants for one job. This is a serious sign of how shitty it is out here for employment. No jobs that pay living wages are hiring now, because they're all filled, and other jobs have so many applicants that getting a job is like winning the lottery.

Which is one of the reasons so many movies suck.
