I decided to go back to school and be a Aesthetician, but I soon realize I don't know if I want to do that. I know this is terrible and I got a loan to pay for this, but I don't know if I really want this. I want to finish getting my degree even though its going to take me long time I probably won't graduate til I'm 35 and I suck at math. I just realized though like I'm studying so hard to do this and like its not even something I really want to do. I would like to get a degree in theater or music, but what am I going to do with a degree in theater or music? Teach? I don't know if I want to do that. So I'm thinking about doing English, Journalism, or Creative Writing. Well I would have to save up and go to Austin if I want to major in Creative Writing. I read somewhere though people who major in writing and related fields have a hard time finding work as well so I don't know. I'm getting a lot of pressure from people to continue on with what I'm doing, but I don't know if I can. I think now though I'm ready to work my ass off again and do good in school. As much as I love acting and I have a strong desire to do that now I feel like I should get school out of the way before I get too old to finish.

Any thoughts? Suggestions? I need to brush up on my writing skills, but it something I always liked doing and was good at I won a scholarship with it so I don't know why I'm doubting myself.

If acting and writing are your real desires, you don't need a degree to do those, but that's not a 100% guarantee to pay the bills.

If you've already got the funding for the aesthetician degree and it's something you could do as a 9-5 job and it brings you some level of satisfaction, go for it. If it puts bread on the table and allows you to pursue your real dreams and you don't dread waking up every day hating your job, go for it.

Just my $0.02.

and remember, you don't have to be defined by your job.

They're both right. A day job with flexible hours is worth it's weight in gold if you're planning on working in some capacity in "the biz". Not only does it pay your bills, but it also gives you the flexibility to turn down work you don't want.

(You'd be surprised how many people get stuck doing porn, either in front of the camera or behind it, because they took the job out of despiration when the rent was due, and now find they won't get hired to do films or TV because their past porn work follows them around.)

And haivng a day job doesn't define who you are as a person - I've known lots and lots of actors with day jobs, and they don't tell people they're a waitress, beautician, auto mechanic, etc. - they're all actors and actresses who have day jobs.

exactly! There's nothing defining about having a day job that requires a little schooling. In fact, you can make more money than you would working a non-skilled day job while pursuing writing or acting.

How long is the Aesthetician school program? If you already have the loan, I say DO IT and afterwards start working to save up money to go back and get your degree in Austin.

It's priceless to have a job or skill you can fall back on at any time, for any reason. It's never a bad idea to pursue any kind of degree or skills.

Don't feel boxed in because you picked one route. You can always change routes later. Finishing this will not define you and block off the possiubility of finishing school. I know people in their eraly 30's who are going back to college and its no big deal....

Its 9 months we did massages the other day and I totally sucked and didn't know what I was doing so that's why I'm having second thoughts. We have test on it too, and its like I'm not ready for this. I just kept thinking about how I should be getting a degree instead.

Listen, it's going to be hard sometimes. But you can't beat yourself up because you don't grab it immediately on the first try. massage is a skill that takes a while to learn. Everyone else in your class is feeling the same way.

You need to know that no one, not the students and not the teachers, are judging you. It's way too easy to drop out of a situation because you feel challenged. I have made that mistake many times and I regret it. Don't back down. Just becaus its not fun doesn't mean you won't enjoy it. I promise.... stick with it. Bite the bulet and do it for 9 months, You CAN and if you do it, you'll feel so much better about yourself and you'll feel like you can conquer anything.

gotta keep a positive attitude. otherwise, you'll keep jumping from one thing to the other everytime it gets challenging.

as a beauty school dropout, i encourage you to finish, if only because you don't want anyone to sing "beauty school dropout" to you never ever ever.

basic advice is don't put any extra pressure on yourself to always be 100% right and sure-such a thing is not possible. Personally, I'd say go ahead an finish what you started and see where that can lead you, you got all the time in the world to change your path later if you desire that.

Alright I'm staying in I was studying and I'm studying right now I don't know how good I'll be, but I'm going to try and that's all I can do. I'm going to give this semester a shot and see how it goes from there.
