"'It's nice to see someplace that doesn't ask you if you like it up the ass, when they are SUPPOSED to be asking you about your art'- Ugly Shyla, dark artist"
Is Uwe Boll a Secret Genius?
I've always heard negative things about Uwe Boll movies but I'd never seen one. When my friend handed me the DVD for House of the Dead last night I thought she was joking. "You. Have. To. See. This." she said, so I felt obligated enough to watch it over dinner.
The first thing that happened was the dialogue caught me off guard. The dialogue was so bad it was almost good, and I had to wonder if it was intentional. And if it wasn't intentional, that would be almost better. The dialogue sounded like someone had hidden a tape recorder under a mattress in a frat house full of drunk lunkheads. It was perfect! When the guy is about to nail that blond in the tent and he makes that face and goes, "Humpety Bumpety!" I lost it.
And then the rest of the movie was the ravers killing zombies with guns and knives. There was something cathartic about it, just watching the hundreds of zombie kills, kind of like I was watching someone play a video game with really good graphics.
When they guy mentions the girl's fencing habits at the beginning it was such ham-fisted, almost innocent foreshadowing, like the guy had never foreshadowed anything before, and I was pleased when, at the end, she starts fencing with that zombie leader and the zombie leader is so excited to finally have someone to fence with he starts laughing (it doesn't come out and say that, but you can just tell).
And I was like, wow, what a totally non-pretentious movie. I liked it. I'd watch it again. Are all of Uwe Boll's movies this good or is House of the Dead his best?
Dude, I recommend 'Postal' in which Michael Pare wears a red sweatsuit and a gold chain and plays a cheap hustler who mugs poor dudes. You also get Uwe Boll in a cameo in his own film talking about how he makes his movies with Nazi Gold hidden during WWII.
Also: Bloodrayne II, in which Billy the Kid is a vampire.
Uwe Boll has far surpassed Ulli Lommel as the best german Filmmaker ever.
House of the Dead: Funny Version is a rerelease that Boll put out with extra footage, different takes, and some re-editing to make it 'funny'. It's fucking Brilliant.
Trivia: Dave Parker, who directed The Hills Run Red, wrote the script for House of the Dead.
The problem with Boll is that most of his movies are based on existing video games, (House of the Dead, BloodRayne, Alone in the Dark.) and most fans of said games don't enjoy his adaptations because they barely ever follow the game's premise or concept.
Gamers can get pretty mean if they perceive that any adaptation of their favourite game is "butchered" or mocked.
But come on, what the hell kinda plot did House of the Dead have as a video game anyway, I think he did much better on that part than the game itself had.
That said, I was a bit disappointed that he opted for filling the action scenes with random clips of the video game. I thought that was kinda cheap. However, that's just my opinion, I do recognize it as innovation, and it didn't ruin the rest of the film anyways.
Now then I can't really judge this dude as this is actually the only movie of his that I've seen. I know people don't like him, there was even this petition running round online which dealt in the attempts to stop him from making movies.
As the former, (May have actually returned, I actually ain't got no clue.) EGM, Electronic Gaming Monthly had once "stated", Uwe Boll grabs helpless video games by the collar, and drags them, kicking and screaming to the silver screen...
It's all bad man, everyone seems to hate this guy, and even more so now that he's directing, apparently, the Metal Gear Solid movie. (Dun quote meh.)
But I think he should be given a chance...I mean, the stigma with video game based movies is that they ALL suck, so why does HE get picked on the most? I don't think Paul Anderson should be left out here...but yeah that's not the point is it.
I mean, as House of the Dead proves, he's capable of doing something fun and imaginative...especially with such a shallow video game.
And if he really is just a goof and fucks everything up, that's something I, personally anyways, can enjoy. The so bad it's good thing.
So I don't know if he's a hero or not...however consider this, nobody likes him but everyone goes and sees his movies anyways, there's a problem somewhere. Lulz.
Dude, I recently met the man at a signing, and while his movies may suck,
he is so effing funny that I would have a beer with him ANYTIME.
he says anything he wants, anytime, and is afraid of no one. Dude, he's so hilarious. I hoghly recommend to anyone going to shake his hand at a signing or convention or event if they have the chance. Very interesting guy.
I've like Uwe Boll's films for quite a while now. Say what you will about his directing abilities, he knows how to make a fun movie.
House of the Dead is my personal favorite, but Bloodrayne is a pretty good one as well. The only one that I have mixed feelings on is Alone in the Dark, but I hear his commentary is so brutally honest about one of his actors, that I have to watch it again just for that reason.
I'd take watching a Boll movie over another Friday the 13th remake any day.
I have not seen a single Boll movie and never will. After reading like 3 interviews conducted with the man I got the impression that he is quite a pompous prick. In one interview he goes on about the financial status of his films, and I'm thinking - Uwe Boll is a great business man, he is an awesome producer. However, he has no creative/artistic bone in his body. He should forget about directing and stick with producing. His goal is to make money with his movies, period. That is why he dumbs them down, tries to make them look like big budget Hollywood action flicks so those stupid Americans (what HE must think, not me) can buy into it. This is mini-Hollywood, folks. The only thing I admire about Boll is how brutally honest he is which I believe stems from taking too many punches to the head as an amateur boxer.

They are pretty much all "that good". Try In the Name of the King next. Burt Reynolds plays a crown wearing king in charge of aland besieged by orcs! Hooper! It's awesome.
