juliette & the licks
juliette & the licksi left work early tonight to catch juliette and the licks at the 40 watt. i don't have any of their albums but i have seen photos and videos of the band and had a feeling this was going to be an incredible show. price: 10 bucks. face: rocked off.

apparently this is their first tour of the u.s. and they played atlanta the previous night. the whole band is high energy, loud and good. juliette is every bit as apeshit crazy and animated as you would expect, but also a much more versatile singer than i thought she would be. she has all the moves down, sure, but what struck me most was her constant connection with the audience. it seemed she was always on the very edge of the stage touching everyone and at one point sang half a song standing IN THE AUDIENCE. i was smiling a lot. not as much as i smiled at, say, beth ditto, but that's another story
juliette, you're good. they ended with "you're speaking my language" (which is the only song i really know well by them because female trouble covers it) and destroyed it. it didn't seem like some celebrity dicking around, and it didn't sound like some polished cd. it was an honest to god awesome rock show. you felt like the band was happy, the audience was happy, it was just some great shit. wish you could have been there.
Didn't recognize her in the pic you posted, didn't make the connection till I went to YouTube:

It's a shame female fronted bands don't get more any more attention - they're either considered somewhat of a novelty or get stuck in the "female fronted band" ghetto except for a handful of subgenres.
You might like Scarlet's Remains for their high energy shows. (They'd be considered more art-punk/deathrock than straight up punk.) I'm always amazed that eveghost, their lead singer, doesn't collapse from exhaustion halfway through the set. I shot their last show in LA (wasn't planning on doing that - their drummer handed me his camcorder and asked if I could tape the show), but the video from it hasn't been posted online yet.

Their posted songs don't do the band justice.

I love Juliette and the Licks! I am a huge Juliette fan so when I first came across the fact that she was in a band, I was stoked! I have always thought she was a good singer. This is a poor example, but the world heard glimpses of her voice in "Natural Born Killers". I always knew she could rock.
I am envious, to say the least. I hope to be able to go to one of her concerts one day, not to mention, meet her. That would be icing on my life cake!
if that's true then the shows must be nuts - - i really liked the songs!
She's about as energetic as Doug from Birth! although instead of rolling around on the floor she'll run around on the stage and through the audience trying to get people to mosh. Doug, as energetic as he is, at least follows some sort of a pattern, eveghost doesn't follow any pattern (at least none that I've been able to pick up on so far) so it's hard to anticipate what she's going to do next.

Fuck, I am a fan! Thanks for this Andrew! I royally dig her voice. And musical style! I really dig "Heavy" and "Listen up".

that makes me happy!!! you're very welcome. i've been trying to sell my friends on the gossip for many years. i saw them open for le tigre in 2004 and beth was just a force to be reckoned with. that is one of the coolest voices to come out of rock n roll in a good long while. and the band just keeps getting better.
beth onstage is a fireball. i saw them again last year in atlanta and my heart was all a-flutter as she casually walked around the club talking to people before the show. and after she played her guts out, she didn't go hide backstage, she came outside covered in sweat and sat on a bench to talk to all of us that came to the show.
but don't take my word for it - - watch her kick ass here:

impossible not to be in love, man. impossible.
This woman's confidence is outstanding! I love her voice and she's just kick ass Andrew! Thank you for bringing this band to my attention. I now have more CD's that I have to buy. Like. HAVE to. Gotta have it!
the older stuff doesn't sound like what you've heard. the new drummer hannah propelled the music in a more dance-oriented direction (their current release 'standing in the way of control') but everything before it has a sort of garage-y what i'd describe as "riot blues" sort of sound. but beth's voice has always been amazing and her style didn't change, so there's a good chance you'll dig the old stuff too. 'thats not what i heard' is a good one too.
don't forget to check out GIRLS ROCK! when it hits dvd. this is still the best movie i have seen all year.
it's a very very important film and could really change things for the better if the right people, and enough people, see it.
Wow thank you Andrew I saw this girl a long time ago when I use to be a big fan of weezer. I use to go to they message boards and well I'm ashamed to say it some of their fans are so damn immature and insensitive and some of the most stupidest little bigots I ever seen. I have seen some of the most racist and horrible stuff I seen there. Anyways well they posted a picture of this girl and I didn't know her. I just knew her as some indie rock girl I didn't bother to check out her music. I should of it fucking rocks I just listen to one song and it kicks ass.
Well anyways they were like "Who the fuck this fat chick think she is posing naked does she think she looks good!" I was horrified because this group prides itself for being so different and yet they were crucify this girl for being fat and defying the boundaries of what is beautiful. Well thankfully there were some that defended saying she looked better than some thin girls and I agree. Well this girl sings great and kicks and and I'll be sure to buy her records
monica, sam and i saw juliette with her new band last thursday night.
she is no longer playing with the licks as her backing band, and it shows. I haven't heard the current album but the new songs were a lot less pop and more janes-addictiony as far as the heavy reverb effects she used on her voice. songs weren't as tight and fun either. seemed the lyrics were more introspective too.
one can't expect for her to have the same chemistry onstage with these new people as she did when we saw her last time, because she'd been with the licks for years. so i'm thinking maybe the next show will be better. juliette is still a monster onstage and puts on one hell of a show, no question about it. rather than walking onstage from the back, she and the whole band came from the front and walked through the crowd to the stage.
she has thei incredible ability to connect with the entire room. you feel like you're part of it and that she sees and gives a shit about you. rare thing in a sea of egotistical rock shows.

PS - - this is beth ditto (her band: THE GOSSIP)
