Or, if you decide to, at least watch this news clip first. It speaks for itself.

I watched this video this morning, then came into work, and discovered this afternoon that we got a shipment of flu shots in and they were dishing them out in the cafeteria.

I got one.

I hate getting sick!

Yikes, Tristan. Well, I'm thankful that you watched the clip first, and were at least able to see both sides of the equation before making your decision.

Well, a couple things.

First, the media is hyping a connection that is not proven to exist; doctors have speculated that "maybe" the cause of her condition was the flu shot. They don't really know. It's just a guess. They probably have other guesses that FOX didn't share with us. However, it being a guess is downplayed because scaring people makes a better story for news websites.

Secondly, very serious reactions from flu shots, while they do happen, are very rare. Things like this woman's condition are *extremely* frickin' rare; otherwise, people would be jittering wrecks all over the place. You probably have about the same chance of spontaneously developing a peanut allergy, but I doubt that would stop you from enjoying an almond joy. This story shouldn't stop anyone from getting a flu shot either.

Tristan, a couple things. Fox was playing spooky piano music to make for a better story, but did you notice how the anchors were tripping over themselves to assure us how rare it was? The mainstream covered this story for damage control. It was a blip that most people have never seen, but the fact that Fox covered it cuts off any kind of panic at the pass. If the mainstream had not done this and the story leaked, it could have been a PR disaster.

Also, they made it clear in the story that the shot is what caused the problem, and then they nearly fell on their faces assuring us that, like you said, the reaction was extremely frickin rare, which it definately is.

But this story is not the only reason to skip your flu shot. Vaccinations are a witches brew of "I can't believe they want to put this into my bloodstream". Most flu shots have mercury in them, for starters, which attacks the human brain like a poison.

I have a hard time believing that the slew of mothers blaming their babies' autism on vaccinations are all making it up. Political scientist Lord Bertrand Russel wrote of a population subdued by diet, injections, and injunctions. GM foods, vaccinations, and restrictions on freedom.

Another thing is, out of the people I know who get the shot, half of them still get the flu. They're sick for a week and then it goes away. My friend recently came down with Swine Flu. She was sick for about a week and a half... really sick... but now she's as right as rain.

I don't know what to say man. Sorry if I sound preachy, but I just want ya to be safe, you know? I check this site often because it's my only cyber hang out and I write all day on my days off so I'm always on the computer, and this morning when I saw you got your shot I kind of cringed. It scared me a bit. I was pretty confident you'd be fine, but just the thought of them pumping that junk into your bloodstream didn't sit well with my morning cigarette.

FOX really doesn't have a say in this; they are not doctors and shouldn't be looked at for medical advice. I've read about this case in a few different articles, and they've all said that the doctors involved "think" and "speculate" that the cause "may" have been from the flu shot. FOX and other news outlets have seized on this to sell the story.

Even if the flu shot did cause dystonia in this woman, this would be the first time, ever. It's never happened before. To anyone. No one's ever heard of dystonia being caused by a flu shot, not in the hundreds of millions if not billions administered in the world's history.

Lastly, as far as mercury, it is the thimerosal that is involved. You likely get more mercury from a tuna taco.

CDC wrote:

Thimerosal contains approximately 49% ethylmercury. There is no convincing evidence of harm caused by the low doses of thimerosal in vaccines, except for minor reactions like redness and swelling at the injection site. However, in July 1999 the Public Health Service (PHS) agencies, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and vaccine manufacturers agreed that thimerosal should be reduced or eliminated in vaccines as a precautionary measure.

Today, all routinely recommended licensed pediatric vaccines that are currently being manufactured for the U.S. market, with the exception of influenza vaccine, contain no thimerosal or only trace amounts. Thimerosal preservative-free influenza vaccines are available, but in limited quantities. The total amount of inactivated influenza vaccine available without thimerosal as a preservative will continue to increase as manufacturing capabilities are expanded.

Well, lemme give it to you both straight:

1) Tristan, flu shots do not necessarily prevent you from getting the flu - just one strain of it, and many people do still get sick anyway. What it does do is make you shell out 20 bucks (unless you have a good job, like you do)

2) The flu shots have totally infected people with weird shit, used to have higher levesl of mercury, and probably did cause mercury poisoning in recent years and may be responsible for that surge of autism from the late 1970's until mid 1990's that is so far 'unexplainable', yet thousands of parents have concluded, through independent studies, that mercury poisoning is most likely responsible for their children's autism

3) OTW - Tristan will probably be okay, and there are many other factos we don't know about this woman's health that could have influenced, increased her chances of getting, or maybe jump-started her specific problem. There needs to be a more thorough study before we can conclude any facts.

4) just the thought of you pumping that junk into your lungs didn't sit well with my morning coffee. Wink

5) No fucking flu shot for me. a little flu never hurt anyone - I'll take my chances.

I once was prescribed a medication (I'll decline to say) that has a rare rare rare side effect of causing a serious skin disorder causing your skin to fall off in clumps. Seriously. The doctors urged me to take it, claiming there was a tiny tiny tiny chance I'd get it and it was so remote that it was vitually nothing to worry about - like winning the lottery.

Well, a friend of my family was also prescribed the same medication, for a different illness (it treats two illnesses) and he immediately was sent to the hosital because his skin flaked off in clumps. He got the skin disorder the first time he took the medication.

This is a true story. It can happen.

I know. They deduce which are the "likely" strains to run amuck in the flu season and then create vaccines based upon that. There are three inactive virus types in the flu vaccine, which I'm assuming to mean three strains of three viruses.

Superheidi wrote:

That's why I posted the link to the CDC - they have greatly diminished the amount of mercury in thimerosal, and are also offering a limited supply of the vaccine that is completely free of it. Those who are very concerned about the mercury, in any amount, could pursue the vaccine in which it is completely absent.

It was an arm shot! And they gave me a tootsie roll! A tootsie roll!! They could have punched me in the kidney and I would have thanked them.

Not quite true; according to the CDC, more "...than 200,000 persons are hospitalized for flu-related complications each year. About 36,000 Americans die on average per year from the complications of flu".

Twice in my adult life i have had sickness with fevers spiking @104 both times were the ONLY times i had ever gotten Flu shots. My boyfriend CAN'T get flu shot because he is allergic to the egg protiens which are the growth matrix. Such shots are Free here in Canada, & people required by law-heath care & child care workers are the majority of people who get them. Most "folks" REFUSE to get them.

Tristan if you don't mind making 11 bucks an hour come get a job where I work. I got free Milk Duds today at work and they didn't make me get a flu shot. Took it right out of the Halloween candy bowl at the front desk lolz
