Submission Guidelines

Rules for Submitting Content

Proofread your work before submitting! Anything poorly written or poorly edited will be discarded without a second glance.

Use the "Submit News" form to send a submission. You may also email submissions to webmaster@pretty-scary.net. Written submissions should be in text format in the body of the email, single-spaced with double spacing between paragraphs in block style (DO NOT INDENT), following the guidelines for that type of content. The subject field should say what type of submission it is, i.e., "Article Submission."

All Pretty/Scary administrators reserve the right to accept or reject stories for any reason.

ARTICLES - NEWS - REPORTS

Topics should relate to horror, or be of interest to women in horror, and should be 200-2000 words.

Include the author's name or pseudonym, email address, word count and summary in the top left-hand corner of your article, then double-space before posting the beginning of your article. It should look like this:

Author: (Name or pseudonym)
Contact: (Email address)
Word Count: (Number of words in article)
Summary: (A brief description of the article)
Notes: (Any information you want the editor to know)

When using the "Submit News" form, this information goes in the "Story Text" area, followed by the first 50 words or so of your article. The rest of the article goes in "Extended Text." If you include any HTML in your article (text is fine), please make sure you select HTML formatting from the menu box below the text fields.

If you're not sure how to use HTML to bold and italicize your text, place an underscore (_) on either side of text you want to be bold, and an asterisk (*) on either side of text you want to be italicized. Example: _This will be bold._ *This will be italicized.*

REVIEWS

See the Review Formats for guidelines.

MEMBER FICTION

Stories may be submitted via our Gallery area. All art should be depictions of horror or women in horror.

Up to three images may be submitted to accompany articles and other content. If you have more than three images you'd like to use, you may place a link to a page with the images in the article.

All images should be sent in .gif, .jpg or .png format.

Image sizes should not exceed 150k in file size and 250 x 250 pixels in dimension.

HALLOWEEN

Halloween is our time to howl, so we welcome content (including art and photos) on this topic from August 1 - October 31. Follow the same guidelines as posted above for the kind of submission you're sending us. Below are some ideas for Halloween topics, but if you have other ideas, feel free to use them:

"How-to" articles
Recipes
Haunted attractions big and small
Costume design and make-up
Halloween for kids (or specifically girls)
Halloween films or books
Pets in costumes

Response time should be within two weeks of submission. Delays may occur, and for this, we apologize.

REVIEW FORMATS

Reviews may be submitted via the Submit News area. Optionally, you may send reviews to heidi@pretty-scary.net or amy@pretty-scary.net. All reviews should be at least 500 words, unless it is a short story or short film. Please use spellcheck on everything! Images from the film’s poster, book cover, or inside the comic book, etc. are always encouraged! Please try, to the best of your ability, to use proper grammar and punctuation. Also, remember, a review does not consist of “That Sucks!” or “That Rocks”. We want to present ourselves as real reviewers who can provide honest and informative feedback to fans, filmmakers and authors.

The administrators, Jen, Amy, and Heidi, reserve the right at any time to decide to not post a review or to take away posting privileges.
