So, we like Winona Ryder because she went out with Johnny Depp, and he tattooed 'Winona Forever' on his arm but when they broke up, he changed it to 'Wino Forever'. We also like her cause she was in Beetlejuice. She's funny cause she shoplifted a bunch of shit and got caught and now is trying to pretend it didn't happen, (But when you look at her you can see, somewhere, deep inside, that she wonders if you're wondering if she's thinking about it). Among her Horror credits? Alien Resurrection, the abysmal Lost Souls, and Bram Stoker's Dracula. She also produced Girl, Interrupted and starred in it, which was a great fucking movie about females, insanity, and sisterhood. But mostly we love her because she played Veronica in Heathers; the greatest teen drama of all time. Winona now stars in the animated version of Phillip K. Dick's A Scanner Darkly, a sophisticated futuristic sci-fi noir thriller revolving around a group of people addicted to a drug called Substance D. She smokes cigarettes. She takes her top off in movies. Winona speaks to Pretty/Scary about her role in A Scanner Darkly, and whatever other crap she wasn't too busy to talk about!
A Scanner Darkly is set in a confusing world of Anaheim, California in the near future. Playing Donna Hawthorne, a beautiful, intelligent, and vulnerable drug addict, opposite sci-fi hunk Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr. and Woody Harrelson was an interesting experience for Ryder. Not only was she playing a role that would later be animated by Richard Linklater's cool new rotoscope animation process, but also the script itself (and the novel its based on) is very very confusing with tons of twists and turns and nightmarish hallucination sequences.
